DEFINITELY, MAYBE

DEFINITELY, MAYBE

The Story:
Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds), a 30-something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce when his 10-year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything about how her parents met and fell in love. Will’s story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the presidential campaign.

For Maya, Will relives his past as an idealistic young man learning the ins and outs of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women. Will hopelessly attempts a gentler version of his story for his daughter and changes the names so Maya has to guess who is the woman her father finally married.

Is her mother Will’s college sweetheart, the dependable girl next door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? Is she his longtime best friend and confidante, the apolitical April (Isla Fisher)? Or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer (Rachel Weisz)? As Maya puts together the pieces of her dad’s romantic puzzle, she begins to understand that love is not so simple or easy. And as Will tells her his tale, Maya helps him to understand that it’s definitely never.

GOOD

GOOD

The Story:
John Halder (Viggo Mortensen), is a professor of literature. When he's not teaching, most of John's time is dedicated to looking after his neurotic wife, tending to the couple's two young children, and caring for his elderly mother, who suffers from senile dementia. Disheartened by his mother's downward spiral, John authors a novel supporting euthanasia for the terminally ill. Much to John's surprise, the Nazi party singles out his tome as the "way forward," and soon begins to heap flattery on the author in the form of glowing compliments and extravagant gifts.

As a result, John accepts a well-paid research assignment from the Nazis. He explains his rationale for accepting the work to his Jewish psychiatrist friend Maurice (Jason Isaacs) in pragmatic terms. Sometimes, one must collaborate with the enemy in order to survive and have a chance to fight back. Meanwhile, John leaves his wife (Anastasia Hille) for one of his students, a young Aryan woman called Anne (Jodie Whittaker), and begins a new life with her. John becomes more than a collaborator and soon he is unable to think of himself as a good man simply in the employ of bad people.

Unfortunately for Maurice, the situation is quickly worsening for the Jews of Germany as John continues his ascent in the party ranks. While John does everything within his power to save Maurice, the risks involved in truly removing his old friend from harm's way may already be too great for the morally compromised author to consider.

PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND

PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND

The Story:

Her parents (Felicity Huffman and Bill Pullman), who seem to have their own fixations on their writing careers, are more often than not into denial about Phoebe's behavior, dismissing her episodes as phases she'll grow out of eventually. Or, perhaps the result of a child with a creative mind of her own, mirroring her own parents as dedicated nonconformists.

Always on the verge of being thrown out of school, Phoebe, who does indeed have the family DNA of a gifted imagination, is drawn to the new drama teacher, Miss Dodger (Patricia Clarkson), who is intent on mounting a student production of Alice In Wonderland. The two rather whimsically minded kindred souls for whom everyday reality is merely an impediment to creative inspiration, magically bond when Phoebe is chosen to play Alice, a situation which sparks maternal jealousy in her alienated mom, and overall exasperation on the part of the school authorities, who assess in the teacher's captivating influence over these children, a pathological loon.

DEAN SPANLEY

DEAN SPANLEY

The Story:
Set in Edwardian England, immediately after the Boer War. In the very early 1900s, Henslowe Fisk (Jeremy Northam) lives beholden to his father, a difficult Horatio Fisk (Peter O'Toole). The Fisk family has suffered the loss of the youngest son named Harrington (Xavier Horen) killed in the Boer War shortly followed by the death of his grieving wife. Fisk Senior is looked after by his house keeper Mrs Brimley (Judy Parfitt) who herself has lost her husband. Fisk Junior reluctlantly visits his father every Thursday.

One day, trying to entertain his father, Fisk Junior brings him to a lecture by a visiting swami(Art Malik) about the transmigration of souls that is attended by the new local clergyman, Dean Spanley (Sam Neill).

Later the same day he sights the Dean at his father's club. A chance third meeting leads to an introduction. Fisk Junior is intrigued by the Dean's oddly open-minded views on reincarnation, and, getting beyond the appearance of an affable, rather bland clergyman, by his weakness for certain peculiar sensations, produced by Hungarian Imperial Tokay wine, which leads him into a dreamlike state. Working with his clever friend Wrather (Bryan Brown), an Australian "conveyancer", Fisk secures a large batch of fine Tokay and the two entertain the Dean, who acts ever more strangely, starting to reveal memories of his previous life – as a Welsh Spaniel.

These memories are acute and convincing, including the rich feelings around food and communication with other canines, a deep distaste for cats and pigs, and the joy of serving his master. As the story unfolds, Fisk Junior comes to understand his father's background better, and the two draw closer.

The survivors all have different recollections of what happened prior to and during the crash, and Claire is determined to help them work out their memories to get everything straight. The task is made more difficult, however, by the near-constant presence of Arkin (David Morse), an ominous looking representative of the airline. He’s determined to write the crash off as pilot error, which Claire and the survivors think is merely a ploy to try to save the airline from a massive lawsuit.

Eric refuses to come to group sessions, so Claire decides to follow up with him on her own. She thinks that he’s exhibiting classic symptoms of PTSD, but he won’t listen to her, insisting that everything is fine. Eric also flirts constantly, and Claire eventually finds herself giving in and crossing that ethical line that exists between all counselors and their patients. But Eric is not really a patient, he reminds her, so they do indeed get it on.

Meanwhile, some of the survivors start disappearing from the group sessions without a trace. Perry thinks they probably just don’t want to come anymore, but Claire believes something more nefarious is going on. She thinks the airline is getting rid of the survivors in an effort to keep them quiet about the crash. Matthew tells his best friend Simon (Tom Felton) about the voices on the tape. Is he losing his mind, is Tom alive or dead?

At home, Matthew plays the tape and hears Tom’s voice again, desperately pleading for help. Then Matthew sees Tom at the window, gaunt and haggard. He rushes out to Tom but no one is there…

Matthew strikes up a friendship with next-door neighbour Amy (Ros Leeming), who is beautiful but troubled. He talks to her about Tom and she suggests he visits a local medium. Matthew is unsure but he is again haunted by nightmarish visions of Tom. When he tries to sleep he has recurring nightmares that he is being buried alive.

In desperation he goes to visit Melissa, Shelley (Nikki Amuka-Bird) the medium, who tells him that the area has been cursed through the ages. Her daughter gives Matthew a present, the drawing of a young girl. The following day Matthew is shocked when he finds out that Simon’s sister, Sophie (Georgia Groome), has been abducted. Matthew realises that the drawing by the medium’s daughter is of Sophie.

The hauntings escalate, Matthew’s state of mind deteriorates. Only Amy seems to believe him, as a tentative romance grows between them.

Matthew knows that he needs to get to the bottom of Tom’s disappearance if he is ever going to save Sophie. There is no going back as he hurtles towards the stark, chilling truth…
