The Story: Richard Dunn (Jeff Daniels) a failed author whose wife, Claire (Lisa Kudrow), a successful surgeon, rents a house in New Jersey in order to help him get over his writer's block. Along for the ride is Richard's imaginary friend, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), who has been with him since 2nd grade.
There, Richard meets Abby (Emma Stone) and hires her as a weekly babysitter, even though he has no children. Their tenuous, new friendship is sparked by Richard's awe over Abby's homemade soup and Abby's enjoyment of Richard's writing and his attempts at Origami. As the season progresses and the warm, quirky friendship between Richard and Abby grows, the two begin to share with each other their dreams and life hardships.

The Story: John (John C. Reilly0) is still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John has all but given up on romance.
