The Story:
Alex (Inés Efron), a 15-year old intersex person from Buenos Aires lives secluded with her parents in a fishing village in Uruguay. At birth, her parents decided not to have her operated on, in order for her to choose her gender. Therefore she still has both her sexual organs. However, she takes corticoids and is raised as a girl. Her parents have moved several times before settling down in Uruguay in order to live a quiet life and keep her from the mockery Alex previously experienced while living in Argentina.

Her father, Néstor Kraken (Ricardo Darín), is a marine biologist who has written a book on sexuality and makes a living treating wounded animals found by fishermen. Her mother, Suli (Valeria Bertuccelli) , invites friends from Argentina: a surgeon, his wife and teenage son Álvaro (Martin Piroyansky). The purpose, unknown to Néstor and Alex, is to discuss the possibilities of a sex-change operation.

No sooner have they arrived than Alex is proposing outright to Alvaro that they have sex together. Meanwhile, Alex has broken the nose of local boy Vando (Luciano Nobile) for casting aspersions on his sexuality. After a grueling scene in which Alex is near-raped by a gang of Vando's friends, Kraken jumps to Alex's defense. When Alvaro finally takes Alex up on the offer of sex, they have anal intercourse, but they are interrupted when Néstor catches sight of them through an ajar door.

However, as the parents battle it out to instill a sense of open-mindedness amongst their society, it is the children who prove themselves to be flexible in understanding the sexual leanings and complexities of others.
