DEAN SPANLEY

DEAN SPANLEY

The Story:
Set in Edwardian England, immediately after the Boer War. In the very early 1900s, Henslowe Fisk (Jeremy Northam) lives beholden to his father, a difficult Horatio Fisk (Peter O'Toole). The Fisk family has suffered the loss of the youngest son named Harrington (Xavier Horen) killed in the Boer War shortly followed by the death of his grieving wife. Fisk Senior is looked after by his house keeper Mrs Brimley (Judy Parfitt) who herself has lost her husband. Fisk Junior reluctlantly visits his father every Thursday.

One day, trying to entertain his father, Fisk Junior brings him to a lecture by a visiting swami(Art Malik) about the transmigration of souls that is attended by the new local clergyman, Dean Spanley (Sam Neill).

Later the same day he sights the Dean at his father's club. A chance third meeting leads to an introduction. Fisk Junior is intrigued by the Dean's oddly open-minded views on reincarnation, and, getting beyond the appearance of an affable, rather bland clergyman, by his weakness for certain peculiar sensations, produced by Hungarian Imperial Tokay wine, which leads him into a dreamlike state. Working with his clever friend Wrather (Bryan Brown), an Australian "conveyancer", Fisk secures a large batch of fine Tokay and the two entertain the Dean, who acts ever more strangely, starting to reveal memories of his previous life – as a Welsh Spaniel.

These memories are acute and convincing, including the rich feelings around food and communication with other canines, a deep distaste for cats and pigs, and the joy of serving his master. As the story unfolds, Fisk Junior comes to understand his father's background better, and the two draw closer.

SPLINTER

SPLINTER

The Story:
Seth and Polly (Paulo Constanzo and Jill Wagner) are a fairly happy couple who are going camping on their anniversary. Seth is not the outdoor type though and convinces Polly that a night in a motel is a better idea. Unfortunately the couple runs into Dennis and Lacey (Shea Wigham and Rachel Krebs). Believing Dennis and Lacey are stranded motorists, Seth and Polly pick them up. To their dismay it turns out Dennis and Lacey are criminals, and the duo takes Seth and Polly hostage.

They drive on together, trading insults and digging through their wallet and purse for valuables until Polly hits an animal in the road and blows a tire. Further investigation reveals that the pulped animal is still moving, which freaks out the already manic Lacey, who had been convinced that it was some animal she owned named ‘Ginger’ to begin with. Polly and Dennis have changed the flat, with Dennis catching a strange splinter in his finger from the punctured tire.

They continue on their journey, with Dennis trying to calm Lacey down, none of the aware that the accident also punctured the radiator, spiked by the spiny projections off the dead animal. The vehicle soon begins to overheat and they pull in at the deserted gas station. Lacey heads to the bathroom for a hit, as she’s still freaking out only to discover the attendant locked in the room, begging her to kill him. The mutation/virus/whatever has taken over most of his body, and he pursues her to the front of the building and attacks her while Dennis and Polly are inside and Seth is gassing up the SUV.

Dennis manages to kill the attendant, but not before he makes short work of Lacey, the three survivors hole up inside the station, but Dennis soon notices that Lacey is still moving when he looks at the security camera feed from outside…

Seth, Polly and Dennis are forced to barricade themselves in the gas station for safety. From there tensions rise as Seth, Polly and Dennis must learn to trust and rely on each other in order to keep the creature out and survive the night
