MARY AND MAX.

mary and Max.

The Story:
It is a simple tale of pen-friendship between two very different people.

It's 1976 when we meet Mary Daisy Dinkle (Bethany Whitmore), a plump, unloved 8-year-old girl with thick glasses and a birthmark on her forehead that is "the color of poo."

Mary lives in the Melbourne suburb of Mount Waverley, where she's neglected by her dull factory-worker dad and her chain-smoking, sherry-nipping mum. Longing for a friend besides her pet rooster, Mary tears a page at random from an American phone book and ends up scrawling a letter to Max Horovitz (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), a 44 year old, severely obese, Jewish man with Aspergers Syndrome living in the chaos of New York.

Max lives a very ordered life. He suffers from severe panic attacks when confronted by anything new, doesn’t understand verbal signals, has an imaginary friend named Mr. Ravioli, keeps a pet fish, has a fondness for chocolate and regularly sees his psychologist.

Mary includes a chocolate bar with her letter and Max writes back, telling Mary much of his life’s history, although his understanding of where babies comes from is just as confused as hers. As the years pass, their letter writing continues and their friendship grows.

When Mary is a young woman (Toni Collette) her father dies and leaves her some money which she uses to go to university to study diseases of the mind. She marries the Greek boy next door, Damian Popodopolous (Eric Bana). Mary wants to cure the world of mental illness and writes a book about Max and the unintended consequences of this book have a major affect on Mary’s life.

GP506

GP506 (South Korea)

The Story:
Something terrible seems to have happened at the military guard post 506, a support base in the DMZ between North and South Korea. No contact has been made for the last couple of hours. Sergeant Major Noh (Cheon Ho-jin) is sent to investigate along with a military police team before the military goes in to cover everything up. One member of the team that was stationed at guard post 506 was the son of a high-ranked officer and bad publicity is the last thing one can afford on the Korean border.

When Noh arrives at GP 506 he and his team discover private Kang (Lee Yeong-hoon), covered in blood and stooped over the chopped up pieces of his comrades. Kang is shot at and so can give no further report of the events at the guard post. The only other survivor is Yoo (Jo Hyeon-jae), who is very slow in relating any information on the incident. It seems as if a virus is responsible for evoking extremely violent behavior. Now it seems as if the game is entering its second round, as Noh's men start showing the same symptoms and death starts its rampage once more...

Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku) is an investigator for the Rochester Police Department who is assigned to investigate the murder of a young girl named Carla Castillo, whose body is found in the nearby village of Churchville covered in cat hair. Against opposition of her colleagues and partner-boyfriend Kenneth Shine (Cary Elwes), Megan insists that the murder is a work of a serial killer. Despite Megan’s considerable efforts, she fails to catch the killer. Stress and obsession of the investigation causes Megan to hallucinate the victim's image. She ultimately has a nervous breakdown and tries to commit suicide.

Following two years of medical treatment and attending mental illness support group headed by Richard Ledge (Timothy Hutton), Megan rejoins the police department in a clerical job.
When another girl, Wendy Walsh is abducted, raped and murdered in Webster, Megan is convinced that the killer has resurfaced and her old fire is reheated. Against his better judgement, Kenneth allows Megan to ride along with investigator Stephen Harper (Tom Malloy), but only in an advisory capacity. However, soon after she is in the thick of things, her old symptoms start coming back, namely in the form of hallucinations of both dead girls now. Ledge tells her that she’s flirting with disaster. Megan knows that the case is in danger of going cold with few leads, no suspects, and a serial killer on the loose. Can she catch him in time? Or will the “Alphabet Killer” go free?
