The Story:
Kate (Catherine Keener) has a lot on her mind. There’s the ethics problem of buying furniture on the cheap at estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store. There’s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter (Sarah Steele) to want the expensive things that Kate wants. There’s the marriage problem of sharing a partnership in parenting, business, and life with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) but sensing doubt nibbling at the foundations.

And there’s Kate’s free—floating 21st century malaise—the problem of how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness, and sadness are always right outside the door. Plus, there’s the neighbors: cranky, elderly Andra (Ann Guilbert) and the two granddaughters who look after her (Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet). As Kate, Alex, and Abby interact with the people next door, with each other, and with their New York surroundings, a complex mix of animosity, friendship, deception, guilt, and love plays out with both sharp humor and pathos.

GODSPEED

GODSPEED

The Story:
Charlie Shepard (Joseph McKelheer), a low-rent evangelist working in Alaska. He employs old-style healing techniques in a transparent attempt to motivate his audience to give. But an encounter with an old sick woman leaves Charlie with a nose bleed. Later we learn that this is probably just part of his act, but it is an intriguing start.

Charlie may have faith in God, but he’s lost his way. He’s turned to the bottle and cheats on his wife with a prostitute. But when his wife and toddler son are murdered, Charlie’s faith is tested like never before. Instead of abandoning the Bible, the jaded Charlie sets out to find hidden meaning within it. He carries around the Good Book crossing out with a black marker all words that he determines are superfluous. Few words remain after his marker has done its work.

The murder of Charlie’s wife and child goes unsolved for 6 months, confounding local lawman Mitch (Ed Lauter). But all that changes when Charlie is visited by the angelic Sarah Roberts (Courtney Halverson), who is seeking help with her troubled brother, Luke (Cory Knauf). Reluctantly, Charlie agrees to travel to Sarah’s home. What awaits may provide Charlie with answers but the cost may be too high.
